Cowgirls Beat Sul Ross State As Pierce Breaks School Assists Record

ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' volleyball team closed out its home slate with a 25-20, 25-23, 20-25, 25-17 win over Sul Ross State and senior setter Ashley Pierce broke the all-time career assists record.

Pierce had a season-best 50 assists in the match and moved past Molli Owen who was a setter from 2011-14. Pierce now has 2,867 assists in her four-year career and she has played almost 100 fewer sets in her career than Owen.

In the first game, the Cowgirls used a 7-2 run to put some distance and take a 20-12 lead. The Cowgirls closed out the game. In the second game, senior Kaytlynn Lewis had two big kills and Triniti Anderson closed the set with a slam as HSU won four of the last six points after it was tied at 21-21.

Sul Ross State pulled away in the third game and then the Cowgirls came out in the fourth game and went up 6-1 and never looked back to close out the match.

Pierce spread the ball around for the Cowgirls as Lewis led the way with 12 kills and Hannah Langerman added 10. Anderson and Kailey Currington added nine kills each and Sarah Bennett added eight kills and four blocks.

Mary Johnson led the defense with 34 digs and Karlie Knapek added 13.

The Lobos Annika Canaba had a rare triple-double with 17 kills, 11 digs and 10 assists and she added five blocks as well.

The Cowgirls are now 12-10 on the year and finish conference play at 9-6. Sul Ross State fell to 11-13 overall and 4-10 in league play. The Cowgirls will close the regular season tomorrow when it plays Texas Lutheran at 3:30 and Trinity at 6 p.m. in San Antonio.

HSU also will play in the American Southwest Conference Tournament next week and will open play against LeTourneau on Thursday night at 7:30 at UT-Dallas.
