GEORGETOWN, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' volleyball picked up its first win of the season with a five-set triumph over Whittier, before falling to Whitworth to close out the Southwestern Invitational on Saturday.
Against Whittier, the Cowgirls dropped the first game 25-13 before winning 25-22 to even the match. HSU took a 28-26 game three, Whittier tied it with a 25-21 win and the Cowgirls took the win 15-9 in the deciding game.
In that fifth game, the Cowgirls used a 6-1 run after it was tied at 8-8 to take control.
Kaytlynn Lewis led the Cowgirls with 13 kills in the match and Sarah Bennett (12) and Alicia Becerra (11) also reached double digits. Ashley Pierce ran the offense with 40 assists and added 18 digs. Mary Johnson had 25 digs and Kailey Currington added 15 digs and nine kills.
In the nightcap, the Cowgirls won the first game 25-23, before Whitworth rallied for 25-12, 25-21, 25-17 victories to take the match.
Kailey Currington led the Cowgirls with a career-best 15 kills. HSU hit .159 in the match as a team. Pierce had 33 assists and eight digs for the Cowgirls. Johnson led the defense with 21 digs.
The Cowgirls (1-3) will return to action next weekend in the Comet Invitational at UT-Dallas.
