Cowgirls Drop Pair At Southwestern Invitational

GEORGETOWN, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' volleyball team dropped a pair of matches on the opening day of the season at the Southwestern Invitational in Georgetown.

In the opener against Southwestern the Cowgirls battled in the first set and led half-way through the set before the Pirates used a late 8-2 run to take the set, 25-21. Southwestern won 25-15 in each of the final two sets.

The Cowgirls hit .048 in the match and the Pirates hit .129.  Alicia Becerra led the Cowgirls with eight kills. Mary Johnson had 17 digs to pace the defense.

In the nightcap against Carthage, the Cowgirls fell 25-15, 25-15, 25-14.

Karlie Knapek led the Cowgirls with five kills and Johnson added 11 digs. Ashley Pierce had a double-double with 19 assists and 10 digs.

HSU will take on Whittier at 3 p.m. Saturday and close out the tournament with a 7:30 match against Whitworth.
