Cowgirls Drop Two Against Pacific in Marshall

MARSHALL, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' softball team fell to the Pacific University Boxers by final scores of 6-1 and 6-2 on Thursday playing at East Texas Baptist.

Pacific University got up 3-0 in the first three innings of game one before Karis Hessert got the Cowgirls on the board with a solo-shot homer to left in the fourth, making it a 3-1 deficit. A couple Cowgirl errors in the sixth led to three more Boxer runs, and Pacific would go on to win 6-1 in game one.

The Cowgirls had three hits in game one to the Boxers' ten. Ka. Hessert led with the homer and Peyton Newman had a double for the Cowgirls. Nicole Martinez had two hits and two RBIs for Pacific.

Haven Williams got the start pitching for the Cowgirls and only allowed three earned runs out of the six with a strikeout in the loss. Morgan Masters Threw for Pacific and had a nice day giving up three hits with five strikeouts. 

The Cowgirls were down 2-1 in the third inning of game two after scoring off a Boxer error. Montana Vaught hit a two-run homer to cap the Pacific four-run third inning to make it 6-1 Boxers.

The Cowgirls battled back with solo homeruns from Taylor Hinojos and Ka. Hessert, her second of the day. Kate Tovar singled home Maggie Hendrix in the top of the seventh to make it 6-4, but the Cowgirls were unable to beat the deficit and dropped game two.

The Cowgirls had seven hits in game two to the Pacific 10, but four Cowgirl errors led to some costly runs.

Ka. Hessert led with a double and another homerun, and Kiana Kushiyama and Martinez both had a pair of hits for Pacific.

Brookelyn Casper started in the circle for game two and had the loss. Kaylen Washington finished for the Cowgirls. Rylee Patton pitched sixth and a third innings for Pacific with a strikeout in the win. Cheyenne Datan got the save in the seventh inning.

The Cowgirls drop to 2-2 on the young season and will play against East Texas Baptist on Friday in Marshall again at 2 and 4 p.m. before returning to Abilene to play Southwestern on Saturday at noon and 2 p.m.
