Cowgirls Come Up Just Short In ASC Championship Game

RICHARDSON, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team came up one basket short in a gut-wrenching 60-58 loss to Mary Hardin-Baylor in the American Southwest Conference Championship on Saturday evening in Richardson.

The game started out slow as both teams were cold from the field and fighting the nerves of the Championship game. It was 2-2 at the first media timeout and HSU led 12-11 after the first quarter.

HSU led 20-18 with 3:00 left in the first half but the Cru closed on a 10-0 run to take a 30-20 lead and the two teams played even in the third quarter and the Cru led 45-35 heading into the final quarter.

UMHB pushed the lead to 53-39 with 5:31 to play in the game. HSU had an answer one more time.

The Cowgirls scored eight straight points to cut it to 53-51 with 3:06 to play. Alicia Blackwell then hit a huge 3-pointer for the Cru but HSU scored five straight, including a 3-pointer by Keilee Burke and a Kaitlyn Ellis layup.

Blackwell made another shot and Parris Parmer hit two free throws to tie the game at :43. It was Blackwell again for the Cru as she buried a pull-up jumper with :12 to play. HSU had three shots, Taylor Gaffney missed a pullup, Keilee Burke missed on a pair of put-back attempts and the buzzer sounded.

HSU played three straight games that came down to the last shot in the tournament.

Gaffney led the Cowgirls with 20 points in her final game as a Cowgirl. Parris Parmer added 12 points and nine rebounds. Both were named to the all-tournament team.

Blackwell led the Cru with 17 points and Kendall Rollins added 12.

The Cowgirls are now 21-7 and it is unlikely they would get an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament. UMHB improved to 24-4 and will advance to the NCAA Tournament.
