ALPINE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team used a strong third-quarter push to pull away from Sul Ross State and won 77-56 in American Southwest Conference action in Alpine.
Hardin-Simmons jumped out to an 11-0 lead in the first 5:16 of the game and led 17-6 after the first quarter. The Lobos had a strong second quarter and cut the deficit at halftime to 28-23.
HSU used a 22-2 run in the third quarter to push the lead out to 55-31 and never let the Lobos back in the game.
The Cowgirls dominated in the paint outscoring the Lobos 44-20 in the paint. HSU also had a 17-5 advantage in bench scoring.
Chandra Nunez led the Lobos with 22 points and Maria Maldanado added 15.
The Cowgirls are now 18-5 on the year and 12-2 in conference play. Sul Ross State fell to 6-17 overall and 4-10 in league play. HSU will close the regular season with road games at UT-Dallas and Ozarks.
