BELTON, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team fell to Mary Hardin-Baylor 56-49 on Thursday night at the Mayborn Campus Center in Belton in American Southwest Conference action.
The two teams are now tied in the ASC West standings. HSU is now 11-4 overall and 5-1 in ASC West play and UMHB improved to 12-3 overall and 5-1 in league play.
The first half featured nine lead change and eight ties and neither team led by more than four points. Freshman Parris Parmer scored 12 points in the first quarter and the teams were tied at 19 after one quarter.
In the second quarter, neither team could get separation and Kaitlyn Ellis' jumper with 3.2 seconds gave the Cowgirls a 28-27 lead heading into intermission.
The game was tied at 39 heading into the fourth quarter. The Cru jumped out to a seven-point lead at 52-45 after four straight HSU turnovers were turned into six points. The Cowgirls had seven turnovers in the quarter that the Cru turned into eight points.
HSU's defense was again solid, holding the Cru to 22-of-67 shooting for 32.8 percent and forcing 18 turnovers.
Parmer led three Cowgirls in double figures with 18 points, Ellis added 14 points and Taylor Gaffney scored 13.
Hannah Holt led the Cru with 18 points and Madison McCoy chipped in 13.
The Cowgirls will return to action on Saturday with a 1 p.m. game at Concordia.
