ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team moved to 3-0 in American Southwest Conference action with a 78-65 win over LeTourneau on Saturday afternoon at the Mabee Complex.
The win was the 15th in a row at home for the Cowgirls. HSU's defense again was the key as they held LeTourneau to 26 percent shooting in the game (20-for-77). It was the seventh time in 12 games they have held the opponent under 34 percent shooting.
HSU jumped out to an early lead and never trailed after the first quarter, but LeTourneau kept the game within striking distance. In the fourth quarter, LeTourneau cut the deficit to 62-57 with 8:10 to play.
The Cowgirls answered with seven straight points as Karlea Ritchie capped the run with a 3-pointer. HSU had an answer the rest of the way whenever LeTourneau made a basket.
HSU had a 42-20 advantage in the game in points in the paint, despite a huge height advantage for the Yellowjackets.
Keauna Whitfield led LeTourneau with 29 points and 12 rebounds. Malacia Guy added 11 points off the bench.
The Cowgirls are now 9-3 overall and 3-0 in ASC action. LeTourneau fell to 5-6 overall and 1-1 in league play. HSU will host Sul Ross State in its next action on Thursday.
