Cowgirls Beat ETBU In Overtime

ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team moved to 2-0 in American Southwest Conference action with a 53-51 win over East Texas Baptist on Thursday evening at the Mabee Complex.

The game featured the top two defensive teams in the conference going into the game and the contest lived up to the billing. ETBU shot 20-of-59 for 33.9 percent and HSU shot 17-of-62 for 27.4 percent. ETBU had 26 turnovers and the Cowgirls had 24.

Both teams actually came out on fire and Taylor Gaffney hit three straight 3-pointers to open the game for the Cowgirls. HSU led 11-2 before ETBU scored eight straight to make it 11-10. HSU led 19-17 after the first quarter.

HSU pushed the lead out to 26-17 in the second quarter and led 29-22 at halftime. ETBU scored the first eight points of the second half to take a 30-29 lead. Karlea Ritchie hit a 3-pointer for the Cowgirls on the next possession and HSU led or were tied the rest of regulation.

The Cowgirls had the ball with a chance at the win but Gaffney's floater came up short and she was called for a foul with 00.7 left and ETBU had the chance to win it. Kenrdrick missed both free throws and the game went to overtime.

HSU outscored the Tigers 7-5 in the overtime. Parris Parmer split a pair of free throws with :22 to play. ETBU had a late chance to tie the game but Keilee Burke blocked Mallory Stephens' lay-up and then Stephens late 3-pointer rimmed out and Amanda Wilson's last second tip attempt rimmed out.

Kendrick Clark led the Tigers with 14 points. Amanda Wilson (14 points and 12 rebounds) and Kim Childress (10 points and 11 rebounds) each had double-doubles.

The Cowgirls are now 8-3 overall and 2-0 in ASC action. ETBU fell to 6-4 on the year. HSU will host LeTourneau on Saturday at 1 p.m.
