ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team moved to 2-0 on the year with an 84-50 win over Schreiner on Saturday evening at the Mabee Complex.
HSU used an attacking defense to force 35 turnovers in the game and outscored the Mountaineers 44-13 in points off turnovers. HSU also had an 18-2 advantage in fast break points in the contest.
The Cowgirls held the Mountaineers to 28.6 percent shooting.
Both teams came out making shots and HSU led 22-19 after the first quarter and the score was 27-26 with 5:06 to play in the first half and HSU closed the half on a 20-6 run. Parris Parmer had eight points in the run, including a pair of 3-pointers and Jesyka Lee and Taylor Gaffney hit 3-pointers in the run.
HSU continued to add to the lead in the second half as the Cowgirls held the Mountaineers to 4-of-28 shooting in the second half.
HSU had a balanced attack with three players in double figures. Taylor Gaffney led the way with 19 points and Parris Parmer added 12 and Karlea Ritchie scored 11. Keilee Burke had a career-best seven steals and Karlea Ritchie added four as the Cowgirls
Gabby Ivarra led the Mountaineers with 16 points and eight rebounds.
The Cowgirls are 2-0 and will host Arlington Baptist on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Mabee Complex. Schreiner fell to 0-2 on the year.
