ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' women's basketball team opened its season with a 76-46 win over Texas Lutheran on Friday night at the HSU Athletic Complex.
The Cowgirls scored the first four points of the game and never trailed. Taylor Gaffney scored seven points in an opening run that moved the lead out 15-6. Maria Fernandez and Parris Parmer added 3-pointers in the opening surge.
HSU pushed the lead out to 19-8 after the first quarter. The Cowgirls used a 11-2 run to end the half to push the lead at the break to 47-22.
The teams played an even third quarter and in the fourth quarter the Cowgirl bench was able to get into the action. Freshman Brittany Schnabel had eight points in the quarter and Conley Niblett hit a pair of 3-pointers.
HSU used a pressure defense that forced 29 turnovers and had a 23-7 advantage in points off turnovers. The Cowgirls also were hot from 3-point range hitting 14-of-31 from 3-point range.
Gaffney led the Cowgirls with 20 points and Parmer hit four 3-pointers and had 12 points in her Cowgirl debut. Cami Davis led TLU with 10 points.
The Cowgirls will return to action on Saturday with a 4 p.m. game against Schreiner at the Mabee Complex.
