ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's soccer team won 3-2 over McMurry on Friday night at the HSU Soccer Complex in American Southwest Conference play.
Finishing the regular season with the win, the Cowboys will host the first round of the ASC Tournament in Abilene next Tuesday at 8 p.m. in a game against Ozarks.
The Cowboys went down early to a War Hawk goal in the sixth minute by Miguel Esteban Jr. The Cowboys tied the game at 1-1 in the 22nd minute when Austin Wills punched one in from a Caziah Yame assist.
Wills returned the favor and placed a free kick ball for a Yame header goal in the 33rd minute to make it a 2-1 lead for the Cowboys. Freddy Hernandez hit a long ball that snuck in the top corner in the 59th minute to extend the lead to 3-1.
A McMurry penalty kick was scored but Esteban Jr. in the 78th minute, but the Cowboys held the lead for the 3-2 victory to finish the regular season.
The Cowboys had 20 shots and eight on frame while the War Hawks had 10 shots and four on goal. The Cowboys had five corners and McMurry had one.
Rafa Mejorado had the start at goalie for the Cowboys and had two saves in the match while McMurry keeper Francisco Avilez had five saves in the loss.
The Cowboys finish regular season play at 14-3-1 and 7-3-1 in the conference. McMurry ends at 6-10-1 and 3-7-1 in the ASC. The Cowboys' season will continue next Tuesday, Nov. 5 at 8 p.m. against Ozarks in the ASC Tournament first round in Abilene.
