HOBBS, N.M. – Hardin-Simmons' men's golf team shot a 289 on Monday and moved up one spot to fifth place at the par-72, 6,618-yard Rockwind Links Intercollegiate that was hosted in Hobbs, N.M., by McMurry.
Senior Luke Smith tied the best round of his career with a four-under 68 to finish sixth overall in the medalist race. He had a 73-68-141 total. Matt Jouett tied for 11th with a 73-71-144. Bobby Johnson shot 71-75-146, Nick Vella shot 76-75-151. Greg Garrison improved from 78 to 75 in round two and Weston Vickers shot 85-92-177.
Colin Uecker of Texas Lutheran won the individual title with a 70-66-136. He won by three strokes over Grame Grunet of the University of the Southwest.
In the team race, Texas Lutheran shot 280-285-565 to win by eight shots over New Mexico Military Institute. McMurry was third with a 575, UT-Dallas was fourth with a 290-291-581 and the Cowboys finished fifth with a 293-289-582. University of the Southwest A, Schreiner, Mary Hardin-Baylor, East Texas Baptist, USW B and Howard Payne rounded out the field.
The Cowboys will return to action next week when they travel to Tunica, Miss., to play in the Rhodes Invitational.
