Cowboys Close Regular Season With Win Over Southwestern

ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' football team closed out its 2019 regular season with a 49-6 win over Southwestern and its postseason fate sits in the hands of the NCAA selection committee.

The Cowboys finished the regular season 8-2 and will hope for one of the five at-large bids from the NCAA when the field is announced at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday on

HSU dominated the game on both sides of the ball and did all they could do to leave an impression on the committee.

The Cowboy defense dominated the Pirates and finished the season allowing just 13.1 points and 232.3 yards per game. Both categories are school records.

HSU took the lead when Kyle Jones hit Jalen Crawford on a 38-yard touchdown pass with :27 to play in the first quarter. Jones hit Jaxson Money on an 8-yard touchdown in the second quarter to cap a 14-play, 99-yard drive to make it 14-0.

Crawford got loose again in the third quarter and scored on an 83-yard bomb from Jones to make it 21-0. Southwestern scored its only touchdown of the game with 6:09 to play in the third quarter, cutting the deficit to 21-6.

Jaquan Hemphill scored potentially the final touchdown of his illustrious career on a 13-yard run to start the fourth quarter. It was his school-record 56th career touchdown.

Jones hit Isaiah Poston on a 65-yard catch and run and then Cale Nanny went 71 yards on a punt return for a touchdown to make it 42-6 and Kavan Johnson scored on a 23-yard pass from Jones.

The Cowboys had 579 yards of offense in the game and limited the Pirates to 237 yards, including just 30 through the air.

Jones went 20-of-29 for 400 yards and five touchdowns. Crawford had five catches for 138 yards and two scores.

Blake Johnston led the defense with 10 tackles and a forced fumble and Hunter Creasey added eight tackles, including four for losses.

It was the final game for the 24 HSU seniors. Southwestern finished the year at 4-6.
