ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team picked up another huge win as the Cowboys beat Belhaven 94-91 on Saturday afternoon in American Southwest Conference action on Senior Day at the Mabee Complex.
The Cowboys have moved into a third-place tie in the ASC West standings after winning their third straight game in the final minute. It was also the last home game for senior Chris Barrett, Chris Henderson and Keenan Holdman.
The contest was again close all the way. Neither team led by more than eight points in the contest and there were 11 ties and 10 lead changes.
The game was tied at 78 at the final media timeout with 3:53 to play. Chase Cobb had a 3-point play with 1:12 to play that gave the Cowboys an 89-84 lead. Chris Barrett had a steal and lay-up that made it 91-86 with :17 to play. Belhaven closed the gap to 92-91 with :09 to play on a deep 3-pointer by Matthew McMillan.
Kyle Brennon sealed the win with a pair of free throws with seven seconds remaining.
The Cowboys dominated the glass 41-31 and especially the offensive backboards. HSU had 19 offensive rebounds and outscored the Blazers 26-3 on second-chance points and 52-26 in the paint.
HSU had five players in double figures. Kyle Brennon led the way with 19 points, Steven Quinn had 18, Neal Chambliss scored 16 points, Barrett had 13 points, five assists and five rebounds and Trey Wooldridge scored 11 points.
Bronson Cooks led the Blazer\s with 26 points and 10 rebounds and talented freshman Luke Couch scored 23 points. Trai James had 14 points and Matthew McMillan and Justin Jones scored 13 points each.
HSU is 9-12 overall and 5-7 in ASC West play. Belhaven fell to 9-12 overall and 5-6 in league action. HSU will close the season with four straight games on the road, starting Thursday night in Brownwood against Howard Payne.
