ABILENE, Texas – Chris Barrett hit a floater as time expired to give Hardin-Simmons men's basketball team a much-needed 61-59 American Southwest Conference win over Louisiana College on Thursday night at the Mabee Complex.
The Cowboys had the final possession with the game tied at 59 and the play broke down but Barrett got off a left-handed floater over two defenders to set off a celebration.
The game was close throughout with eight ties and five lead changes in the first half. HSU led 26-25 with 3:11 to play in the first half before Belhaven closed the half on a 9-1 spurt to take a 34-27 lead to halftime.
HSU trailed 40-31 when Chase Cobb hit back-to-back 3-pointers and made a lay-up to cut it to 40-39. LC pushed it back out to 48-41 with 7:48 to play. HSU responded with a 10-0 run to take a 51-48 lead. In the run, Kyle Brennon hit a 3-pointer, Cobb a pair of free throws and hit his third 3-pointer of the half and Trey Wooldridge hit a jumper.
LC retook the lead and led 59-56 with 1:01 to play when Steven Quinn hit a 3-point play. The Cowboys had two offensive rebounds on that possession which tied the game. HSU forced a tough 3-pointer by Aaron McGhee that Quin rebounded to set up the dramatics.
Cobb and Brennon led a balanced attack with 13 points each for the Cowboys. Denzel Austin led the Wildcats with 14 points. Kae'ron Baker had 12 points and K.J. Bilbo chipped in 11.
The Cowboys are now 8-12 overall 4-7 in American Southwest Conference action. Louisiana College fell to 11-9 overall and are 5-6 in the ASC East. The Cowboys are now in a three-way tie for third place in the ASC West.
