Cowboys Beat UMHB In Overtime

ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team picked up a 106-103 overtime win over Mary Hardin-Baylor in overtime to stay in contention for a postseason berth on Saturday afternoon at the Mabee Complex.

The Cowboys are now 7-12 overall and 3-7 in league play and UMHB fell to 12-7 overall and 4-6 in ASC action. HSU is one-game out of the final playoff spot with six games left in the regular season.

HSU used a 10-0 run early in the game to take a 14-3 lead. The Cru cut it to 36-34 at one point but never led the rest of the first half and HSU led 46-41 at halftime.

The Cowboys led 75-66 with 8:26 to play before the Cru made a push. The Cru's biggest lead of the day and only lead of the second half came on a Logan Hicks jumper with 2:14 to play that made it 87-85. Neal Chambliss tied the game with 1:36 to play on a layup.

Steven Quinn and Casey Armour each hit a pair of free throws in the final minute and HSU had the ball with a chance to win but Quinn's shot rolled off the rim and the game went to overtime.

With the game tied with 1:19 to play Chase Cobb hit a huge 3-pointer for the Cowboys to take a 99-96 lead. Both teams hit a pair of free throws and then Sam Moore hit a jumper to cut the HSU lead to 101-100.

Chris Barrett hit a pair of free throws to give HSU a 103-100 lead and Moore came down and buried a 3-pointer with :08 to play to tie the game at 103. UMHB coach Ken Deweese then called a timeout his team did not have resulting in a technical foul.

Barrett hit both free throws and the Cowboys got the ball and Keenan Holdman split a pair of free throws. Moore's 3-pointer was off the mark and the Cowboys pulled down the rebound for the win.

The game featured 55 fouls and the teams combined for 89 free throws. UMHB was 32-of-40 and HSU was 25-of-39.

Quinn led five Cowboys in double figures with 23 points and nine rebounds. Kyle Brennon added 20 points, Trey Wooldridge set career highs in points and rebounds with 18 points and 14 rebounds, Cobb had 12 points in his first career start and Barrett added 10 points.

UMHB had four players score 20 or more points in the game. Sam Moore and Logan Hicks had 24 points each and Casey Armour and Joseph Mitchell each had 20.

HSU dominated on the backboard in the game, outrebounding the Cru 46-30 and HSU had 19 offensive rebounds.

The Cowboys host Louisiana College and Belhaven next week in the final home games of the season.
