Cowboys Pick Up Big Win At McMurry

ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team picked up a huge road American Southwest Conference win by defeating McMurry 65-59 on Thursday night at Kimbrell Arena.

Both teams played intense scrappy defense all night long making it hard to score. McMurry shot just 37.9 percent on the night and the Cowboys were 36.9 percent. The point difference in the game came at the foul line where the Cowboys were 11-of-18 and McMurry was just 5-of-10.

Neither team could get separation in the first half as the Cowboys' biggest lead was four points early in the half and McMurry's biggest lead came at 27-21 with 2:19 to play in the half. McMurry led at halftime 32-30.

McMurry led 37-33 with 16:22 to play in the game before the Cowboys made the biggest adjustment of the game. Both post players played together and HSU was able to dominate on the inside.

The Cowboys went on a 13-1 run and Neal Chambliss and Trey Wooldridge each had a pair of buckets in the run and Layton Sharp capped it with a 3-pointer in the corner to make it 46-38 with 10:57 to play in the game. It was the biggest lead for either team in the game up to that point and the Cowboys led the rest of the way.

Every time McMurry cut the deficit the rest of the way, the Cowboys had an answer. Wooldridge hit back-to-back shots to make it 50-42 after McMurry had cut it to 46-42. Dedrick Berry's jumper for McMurry made it 55-51 with 4:24 to play but Chase Cobb had the big shot this time a 3-pointer in the corner to push the lead back to 58-51 and the Cowboys closed it out from there.

Trey Wooldridge had 14 points for the Cowboys off the bench and Chris Barrett added 12 points, six rebounds and five assists. Cody LeBlanc led McMurry with 16 points but was just 5-for-18 from the field. Krishawn Terry had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Both teams are now 6-11 on the year. McMurry has a one-game lead on the Cowboys in the ASC West standings. McMurry is 3-5 and the Cowboys are 2-6.

HSU is home next week for games against Concordia and Mary Hardin-Baylor. The Thursday game will be the HSU Jam game at the Mabee Complex.
