BELTON, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team fell 84-78 to Mary Hardin-Baylor in American Southwest Conference action on Thursday night in Belton.
The Cru came out with a strong opening kick and led 25-15 but the Cowboys answered with a 15-0 run, including 13 by Steven Quinn to take a 30-25 lead. HSU carried a 42-40 lead into halftime. Quinn, who missed both games last week with a sternum injury, finished with 19 points in the half.
The teams traded runs in the second half HSU led 59-47 before the Cru went on a 16-0 run to take a 63-59 lead with 9:12 to play.
Quinn hit a 3-pointer to cut the HSU deficit to 67-66 and then the Cru responded with six straight points to push the lead to 73-66 the largest lead for the Cru of the half at that point.
The Cowboys cut it to 76-73 on a Chase Cobb free throw with 2:29 but that was as close as they would get it the rest of the way.
Quinn led the Cowboys with a season-best 29 points and Chase Cobb added 10 points.
Former Cowboy Salomon Smith had 22 points and 12 rebounds to pace the Cru and Casey Armour added 20 points and 12 rebounds.
HSU is now 5-10 overall and 1-5 in ASC action. UMHB improved to 11-4 overall and 3-3 in league play. HSU will return to action on Saturday at Concordia at 3 p.m.
