ABILENE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team continued its run of games going down to the wire but fell 67-64 to American Southwest Conference West Division leader Sul Ross State on Thursday night at the Mabee Complex.
Chris Henderson, who had been on a season-long shooting slump, broke out in a big way hitting four first-half 3-pointers and he made six from behind the arc on the night. The Lobos opened up a 29-20 lead in the first half, its biggest lead of the night. HSU trailed 37-32 at halftime.
The Cowboys went on a 12-0 run in the first 7:03 of the half to take a 44-37 lead. The Lobos retook the lead on a Triston Licon 3-pointer with 9:26 to play. It was the third of three straight triples for the Lobos. Henderson answered with a 3-pointer of his own to give the Cowboys the lead back.
HSU led 61-56 when Jezreel Griffin hit a 3-pointer to cut it to 61-59 with 2:07 to play. Keenan Holdman split a pair of free throws for HSU before Griffin made a layup to cut it to 62-51 and then Licon stole the inbounds pass and hit a short jumper to give the Lobos the lead with 1:27 to play.
Neal Chambliss gave the Cowboys the lead back with a jumper with 1:01 to play. Griffin hit a pair of free throws with :35 to play and Chambliss missed a short jumper. The Cowboys fouled B.J. Hollis and he hit both free throws with :25 left. The Cowboys ran a set that got Henderson a good look from 3-point range but the ball rattled out.
The Lobos missed the front end of a 1-and-1 with :05 to play but Holdman's desperation 3-pointer was off the mark.
Henderson had 19 points and Chambliss added 12 for HSU. Licon and Griffin had 18 points each for Sul Ross State.
HSU has dropped seven straight games and is now 4-9 overall and 0-4 in league play. Sul Ross State improved to 7-6 overall and 4-0 in league play. HSU will host Howard Payne on Saturday at 3 p.m. at the Mabee Complex.
