KERRVILLE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team held off a late Schreiner rally and won 71-68 on Friday night in Kerrville.
A Stephen Quinn 3-pointer with 2:04 to play in the first half gave the Cowboys their biggest lead of the first half at 32-20, but the Mountaineers closed the half on an 8-2 run to cut the deficit to 34-28.
An 8-0 run by the Cowboys gave HSU its biggest lead of the night with 5:46 to play in the game but again the Mountaineers made a push. HSU led 65-64 with 2:01 to play when Chris Barrett scored a floater in the paint and was fouled and made the free throw. Schreiner's Jordan Urbina hit a layup with :38 to play to cut the score to 69-68.
HSU called a timeout and Keenan Holdman made a layup in the paint with :10 to play and a late attempt to tie by the Mountaineers crawled off the rim and Barrett secured the rebound and the win for the Cowboys.
Quinn led three Cowboys in double figures with 16 points. Barrett added 14 points, eight rebounds, six steals and four assists and Holdman had 10 points.
Matthew Rindahl had 24 points and 12 rebounds and Alex Dehoyos added 20 points for Schreiner.
HSU is now 3-1 on the season and will return to action on Saturday at Texas Lutheran at 4 p.m. on Saturday. The Mountaineers fell to 1-3 on the year.
