LINCOLN, Neb. – Hardin-Simmons' men's basketball team gave No. 8 Nebraska Wesleyan a strong push but came up short in an 88-81 loss to the 2018 national champions in Lincoln on Sunday afternoon.
HSU scored the first five points of the game before the game settled in. A 9-2 run gave the Prairie Wolves a 14-7 lead. HSU led 29-28 before NWU went on a run to make it 38-31. NWU led 45-41 at the half.
In the second half, HSU led 53-48 after a Keenan Holdman layup but NWU answered again and pushed the lead out to 81-55 with 4:02 to play. HSU had one final push in it. The Cowboys cut it to 82-79 with :44 to play but NWU was able to close it out by making free throws down the stretch.
The Prairie Wolves start five seniors and all five finished in double figures. Nate Schimonitz had 26 points and Dylan Dirks added 19. Nate Bahe had 11 points, nine rebounds and seven assists.
HSU is 2-1 on the year and NWU improved to 4-0. The Cowboys will play at Texas A&M Commerce on Monday night in an exhibition game.
