GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas – Hardin-Simmons' baseball team fell 14-3 to Methodist University on Saturday afternoon at AirHogs Stadium in Grand Prairie.
HSU scored a run in the first inning on a sacrifice fly by John Paul Tople, but Methodist answered back with a run in the first inning on an RBI double by Alex Kachler.
The Monarchs scored three runs in the third inning to take the lead and added four more in the fifth, three in the sixth and three in the eighth inning.
HSU scored single runs in the sixth and seventh innings. Tople had an RBI groundout in the sixth and Hunter Garrison had an RBI single in the seventh.
The Cowboys used seven different pitchers. Raby Hampton took the loss in his debut. Andrew Hernandez, Orel Rhodes, Tyler Williams, Channing Hickman, Taylor McMackin and Hayden Day all worked in relief. The Cowboys struggled defensively with six errors on the day that led to eight unearned runs.
Garrison and Garrett Buckner had two hits each for the Cowboys and Kachler had four hits to pace the Monarchs. Tyler Brown went seven strong innings allowing three runs to earn the win for MU.
HSU is now 0-2 on the year and Methodist improved to 1-1. The Cowboys will look for their first win of the season on Sunday when it plays Hendrix College at 4 p.m. in Grand Prairie.
